When I was young my father adopted a boy whose family was Irish names McManus. I grew up thinking that Irish was Mc and Scottish was Mac. But now I see both in both countries. I know there was much intermingling with the Irish and the Scots. I would love to have someone who knows history and enjoys talking about it. I don't know much about my birth father but his name, last name was George. I checked the clan list and saw I could be Scottish, either MacNab or Buchanan. Since I have a great interest in all things Scottish, I would not be surprised if i had Scot in me!

They both mean 'son of" and, contrary to some thoughts, they don't denote either Irish or Scottish origin. Considering that the original Gaelic is thought to have reached Scotland from Ireland centuriesw ago this is not surprising that it is common to both backgrounds.

Permalink Reply by Anne Caluwaert on June 13, 2011 at 18:18 Hi Jean,
I was adopted. I knew nothing about my birth parents until my birth mother and I connected in 2001. All she would tell me about my birth father was his name, John George. He was born around 1920 in cincinnati,Ohio. She said he went to California a few years after I was born. She died in 2005 so that is all I could find out. I have tried to find more but have been unsuccessful. When I checked the clan pagem it said that the name George xould be in clan MacNab or Clan Buchanan. I would be willing to guess that there is some scot on his side. My birth mother was 1/2 Swiss and 1/2 italian. I have loved scotland for many years, and also the bagpipe, which i first heard when i was about 10 in the fifties. My niece is trying to find something out, but so far has been unsuccessful. I watched a movie last night about scottish clans, and they said something about blood tests. I tried that, but the company i talked to said I would have to have a brother or other male relative to find out. I thought they could tell ancestry form a blood test no matter what. Guess I was wrong!

The clan is undergoing a world renaissance.
Slowly but surely we are linking members around the world.
The initiative was given a kick along by those attending The Gathering, Edinburgh, in 2009.
