Let the world know about Your Scotland

Hello I am trying to trace back my family to Scotland. I know the MacDonald Clan is a huge clan but I am hoping someone might recognise the names and dates of my family members. Here are the details I am positive of...These are my great great grandparents who immigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1840. They lived in the Louisbourg area of Nova Scotia.
Sarah MacDonald
Born: Sept. 18th 1826
Died: After 1901 in Nova Scotia

Sarah's Husband:
Hector MacDonald
Born: Early 1820’s in Scotland
Died: Between 1881 and 1891
Emigrated from North Uist, Outer Hebrides, Scotland in 1840

Their sons:
Daniel Hector Born: July 29th 1859 Died: Feb. 25th 1940
Neil Born: Nov. 13th 1866 Died: ?
Donald John Born: Oct. 30th 1868 Died: Apr. 2nd 1926 (He is my grandmother's father)

I have a couple of generations back on Sarah's side but cannot confirm that this is the correct line from whence she came....Here is that info....
Sarah's parents:
Donald MacDonald
Born: 1811 North Uist, Inverness, Scotland Died: 1853

His wife:
Catherine MacDermid (daughter of Archibald MacDermid and Christine MacDonald)

Donald's parents:
Archibald MacDonald
Born: 1784 North Uist, Hebrides, Scotland
Died: August 10, 1861 (January 12, 1856)

Annie MacAulay
Born: 1787 North Uist, Hebrides, Scotland
Died: ?
Married: about 1807 North Uist, Inverness, Scotland

I have a attached a document that has a picture of my great grandparents Donald John and Maria Elisabeth (Smith) MacDonald.

I have been working on this family history since 1995 and have hit a huge roadblock so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Kendra

Hi Kendra,

It's often difficult to get back beyond the 1780s, especially if your family had common names and weren't landowners.

Good luck with your research!

Kirsty
Thanks Kirsty!

Yes, they did have common names and that seems to be the problem with me getting any more information. I appreciate your response though!

Kendra
Kendra,

You have two choices to further your research...the Library at Clan Donald Skye (See "http://www.clandonald.com".) or me: Graham Evan MacDonell, Principal Researcher, The Great Glen Genealogical Research Centre, Suite 324 - 24 Station Square, Inverness, Inverness-shire, Scotland, UK IV1 1LD greatglen45@btinternet.com or graham@greatglenancestry.com

Cheers,

Graham
